When should I trim my trees and shrubs?

Prune most deciduous trees and shrubs in late winter or early spring while they are still dormant. Spring-flowering shrubs should be pruned right after they bloom. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches any time you spot them. Never prune more than 25 percent of a plant's canopy in a single year to avoid stressing the plant.

Correct timing of pruning encourages healthy growth, improves flowering, and prevents damage from falling branches during storms.
