When should I start mowing my lawn in spring?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Start mowing when your grass reaches about 3 to 4 inches tall in early to mid-spring. Do not mow too early or too short. Set your blade to remove no more than one-third of the grass height at each mowing. Keep the blade sharp for a clean cut. Mowing too early on wet or soft ground can damage the lawn.

Why It Matters

The first spring mow sets the tone for the entire growing season. Proper timing and technique encourage thick, healthy growth.
