How do I winterize my sprinkler system?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Shut off the water supply to the irrigation system from the main valve. Open the manual drain valves at the lowest points of the system to let water drain out. If your system has automatic drain valves, they will open when water pressure drops. Use an air compressor to blow out remaining water from the lines if you have backflow preventers or valves that do not drain completely.
Why It Matters
Water left in sprinkler pipes freezes and expands, cracking pipes and valves. Proper winterization prevents costly spring repairs.
