How do I prepare my home for extreme cold?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Insulate exposed pipes in crawl spaces, attics, and garages. Keep cabinet doors open under sinks to allow warm air to circulate. Let faucets drip slowly to prevent freezing. Seal drafts around windows and doors with weatherstripping or caulk. Keep your thermostat at 55 degrees or higher. Have emergency heating and supplies ready in case of power outages.
Why It Matters
Extreme cold can cause pipes to freeze and burst within hours. Preparation before a cold snap prevents the most costly winter emergencies.
