What happens if I don't pay my property taxes?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
If you do not pay your property taxes in New Jersey, the municipality can place a tax lien on your property. After a period of non-payment, the town can sell a tax sale certificate to an investor who pays the delinquent taxes. If you still do not pay, the investor can foreclose on your property and take ownership.
Why It Matters
Property tax delinquency can lead to losing your home through tax foreclosure. Early intervention through payment plans or assistance programs is critical.
