Why is my water pressure higher upstairs?

Higher water pressure upstairs is unusual since water pressure is naturally lower at higher elevations due to gravity. If you have higher pressure upstairs, you likely have a pressure reducing valve (PRV) that needs adjustment or is failing. The PRV regulates incoming water pressure for the whole house and is usually located near the main shutoff. A plumber can test and adjust the PRV to ensure consistent pressure throughout the house.
Why It Matters
Inconsistent water pressure between floors can indicate a failing pressure regulator, which can cause pipe damage or appliance issues if not addressed.
