Why does my water taste metallic?

A metallic taste in water is most often caused by dissolved minerals from aging metal pipes. Iron and manganese give water a rusty metallic taste, while copper creates a bitter metallic flavor. Low pH (acidic) water can leach metals from pipes more aggressively. If the taste is in both hot and cold water, the issue is in your supply pipes. A water test can identify the specific minerals and determine the right filtration solution.
Why It Matters
Metallic-tasting water can indicate pipe corrosion that may eventually lead to leaks. It also means potential heavy metal exposure that a filter can address.
