Why does my water heater pilot light go out?

A gas water heater pilot light that keeps going out is most often caused by a faulty thermocouple, which is a safety device that detects whether the pilot is lit. If the thermocouple is dirty, bent, or failing, it shuts off the gas even when the pilot is burning. Clean the thermocouple gently with sandpaper and ensure it is positioned correctly in the flame. If the problem continues, replace the thermocouple, which costs about 10 dollars and is a simple DIY fix.
Why It Matters
A pilot light that keeps going out means no hot water. Replacing a thermocouple is inexpensive and much cheaper than calling an emergency plumber.
