Why does my water have a sulfur smell?

A sulfur or rotten egg smell in your water is caused by hydrogen sulfide gas, usually from bacteria in your water heater or well water. For well water, the source may be in the groundwater. For city water, the issue is typically in the water heater's anode rod reacting with bacteria. Replace the anode rod with a powered or zinc anode rod. Flush the water heater and raise the temperature to 140 degrees for a few hours to kill bacteria. If the smell is in both hot and cold water, the source is in the supply.
