Why does my toilet run constantly?

A toilet that runs constantly is usually caused by a worn flapper that does not seal properly, a fill valve that is stuck or misadjusted, or a chain that is too tight or too loose. Open the tank, inspect the flapper for cracks or warping, adjust the chain so it has slight slack, and check that the fill valve shuts off at the correct water level. These are inexpensive and easy DIY fixes.
