Why does my pipe make a banging noise?

Banging pipes, known as water hammer, happen when water flow suddenly stops and the momentum slams the pipe against framing. This is common after a washing machine or dishwasher valve closes quickly. Install water hammer arrestors on the supply lines to the appliance causing the noise. If pipes bang when you turn off a faucet, loose pipe straps may need tightening. In severe cases, high water pressure may be the cause and a pressure reducing valve adjustment may be needed.

Why It Matters

Water hammer can damage pipes, loosen joints, and cause leaks over time. Installing arrestors or securing loose pipes prevents costly plumbing damage.
