Why does my garbage disposal smell bad?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Bad odors from a garbage disposal are caused by food particles trapped in the rubber splash guard, blades, or drain line. Run cold water with ice cubes and lemon or orange peels to clean the blades. Drop baking soda and vinegar down the drain, let it fizz, then flush with hot water. Remove and clean the rubber splash guard regularly. Avoid putting grease, coffee grounds, or starchy foods down the disposal.

Why It Matters

A smelly disposal affects your kitchen's hygiene and makes cooking unpleasant. Regular cleaning prevents odor buildup and extends the life of the unit.
