Why does my faucet drip after turning it off?

A faucet that drips after being turned off is caused by a worn washer, O-ring, or cartridge that is no longer creating a complete seal. In compression faucets, the rubber washer at the end of the valve stem wears out. In cartridge or ceramic disc faucets, the cartridge may be damaged or the seals may be worn. Shut off the water supply, disassemble the faucet handle, and replace the worn part. Most faucet repair kits cost under 15 dollars.

A faucet that drips can waste over 3,000 gallons of water per year. Fixing it saves water, lowers your utility bill, and prevents fixture corrosion.
