How do I winterize my plumbing?

Start by shutting off the main water valve, then open all faucets to drain remaining water. Drain the water heater and shut it off. Flush toilets and add antifreeze to the bowls and tanks. Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, shut off outdoor spigots from inside, and insulate exposed pipes in the basement, attic, and crawl spaces. If leaving for winter, set your thermostat to at least 55 degrees.
Why It Matters
Winterizing prevents pipes from freezing and bursting, which can cause thousands of dollars in water damage and require major plumbing repairs.
