How do I maintain my garbage disposal?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Run cold water before and after each use to flush debris through the drain. Grind ice cubes and citrus peels weekly to clean the blades and deodorize. Avoid putting fibrous foods like celery, potato peels, grease, oil, coffee grounds, or pasta down the disposal. Never use chemical drain cleaners in the disposal. Clean the rubber splash guard with a brush and disinfect it regularly.
Why It Matters
Proper maintenance prevents clogs, odors, and premature disposal failure. A well-maintained disposal can last 10 to 15 years instead of needing replacement.
