How do I install a water softener?

Choose a location near your main water line, typically in the basement or garage, with access to a drain and electrical outlet. Shut off the main water supply and drain the system. Cut the main water line and install a bypass valve. Connect the softener's inlet and outlet to the water line using compression fittings or copper pipe.
