How do I fix a squeaky faucet?

Squeaky faucets are usually caused by friction between metal parts, a dry O-ring, or worn washers. Shut off the water supply under the sink. Disassemble the faucet handle and apply plumber's grease to the O-rings, washers, and moving parts. Wipe away excess grease and reassemble. If a rubber washer is dried out or cracked, replace it. This simple lubrication typically eliminates the noise for years.

A squeaky faucet is annoying but also indicates friction that will eventually wear out internal parts. Lubricating extends the life of your faucet.
