How do I fix a clogged toilet?

Use a flanged plunger designed for toilets. Place the plunger over the drain opening and push down slowly, then pull up sharply to create suction. Repeat until the water drains. If plunging fails, use a toilet auger (closet snake) inserted into the bowl opening and crank it through the trap to break up or retrieve the blockage. Never use chemical drain cleaners in a toilet as they can damage the porcelain and are ineffective on solid clogs.
