Why does my HVAC system make strange noises?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Banging or clanking may indicate loose or broken parts. Squealing often means a worn belt or motor bearing. Rattling can be loose ductwork or panels. Hissing may indicate a refrigerant leak. Grinding sounds from the outdoor unit could mean a failing compressor. Any persistent noise should be checked by a professional.
Why It Matters
Unusual noises are often the first warning sign of HVAC problems. Addressing them early prevents more expensive repairs or system failure.
