Why does my AC ice up?

An air conditioner ices up when there is restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Common causes include a dirty air filter, blocked return vents, a dirty evaporator coil, or a refrigerant leak. The ice forms on the indoor coil and prevents proper cooling. Turn off the AC and let it thaw completely before troubleshooting. Replace the filter and check for obstructions. If the problem returns, call an HVAC professional.
Why It Matters
An iced AC cannot cool your home effectively and running it with ice on the coil can damage the compressor, leading to expensive repairs.
