What is the ideal humidity level for my home?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

The ideal indoor humidity level is between 30 and 50 percent. Humidity above 60 percent promotes mold growth, dust mites, and a clammy feeling. Humidity below 30 percent causes dry skin, irritated sinuses, and can damage wood furniture and flooring. Use a hygrometer to monitor levels. A humidifier adds moisture in dry winter months, while a dehumidifier helps in damp basements and during humid South Jersey summers.

Why It Matters

Proper humidity control protects your health, prevents home damage, and makes your home feel more comfortable at a lower energy cost.
