How do I seal air leaks around my windows?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Apply weatherstripping to movable parts of windows and caulk around stationary frames. Use rope caulk for temporary seals on drafty windows in winter. For larger gaps, use expanding spray foam. Check for drafts by moving a candle or incense stick near window edges on a windy day. Storm windows or window insulation film can provide an extra layer of protection during cold months.

Why It Matters

Sealing window air leaks is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve home comfort and reduce heating and cooling costs.
