How do I reduce my heating costs?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Start with a programmable or smart thermostat to lower temperatures while you sleep or are away. Seal air leaks around windows, doors, and attic hatches with weatherstripping and caulk. Improve attic insulation to at least R-49. Change furnace filters monthly during heating season. Schedule an annual furnace tune-up to keep it running efficiently. Even small changes like lowering your thermostat by 1 degree can cut heating costs by about 1 percent.

Why It Matters

Heating is typically the largest energy expense in a home. Reducing costs directly lowers your monthly utility bills without sacrificing comfort.
