How do I prevent my pipes from freezing?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Keep your home above 55 degrees even when away. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to reach pipes. Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold. Insulate pipes in unheated areas like basements, crawl spaces, and garages with foam pipe sleeves. Seal air leaks near pipes. Disconnect outdoor hoses and shut off outdoor faucets before winter.

Why It Matters

Frozen pipes can burst and cause thousands of dollars in water damage. Prevention is simple and far less expensive than repairs.
