How do I improve my home's insulation?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Start with the attic, where heat loss is greatest. In South Jersey, aim for R-49 to R-60 attic insulation. Add insulation to exterior walls, basements, and crawl spaces where accessible. Seal air leaks around windows, doors, electrical outlets, and pipe penetrations before adding insulation. Use blown-in cellulose or fiberglass batts for attics and spray foam for hard-to-reach areas. A home energy audit can identify the biggest gaps.
Why It Matters
Proper insulation is the most cost-effective way to reduce energy bills, improve comfort, and reduce strain on your HVAC system year-round.
