How do I choose the right size HVAC system?

HVAC sizing is measured in tons of cooling capacity and BTUs of heating. A professional should perform a Manual J load calculation that accounts for your home's square footage, insulation, windows, ceiling height, and orientation. A rough estimate is about one ton per 500 to 600 square feet. Never rely on the old system's size alone, since additions, new windows, or improved insulation may have changed your home's needs.
Why It Matters
An improperly sized HVAC system wastes energy, shortens equipment life, and cannot keep your home comfortable in extreme weather.
