When should I replace my smoke detectors?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Replace smoke detector units every 10 years from the date of manufacture. Replace batteries at least once a year, or when the low-battery chirp sounds. Test every detector monthly by pressing the test button. Install detectors on every level of your home and inside each bedroom.

Why It Matters

Smoke detectors save lives, but they lose sensitivity over time. Ten-year-old detectors may not work when you need them most.
