How often should I test my smoke detectors?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Test smoke detectors monthly by pressing the test button. Replace batteries at least once a year, or when the low-battery chirp starts. Replace the entire smoke detector unit every 10 years. Install detectors on every level of your home and inside each bedroom. Carbon monoxide detectors should follow the same schedule.
Why It Matters
Working smoke detectors cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half. Regular testing ensures they work when you need them.
