How do I maintain my water heater?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Flush your water heater annually by attaching a garden hose to the drain valve and letting several gallons of water run out. This removes sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. Check the pressure relief valve yearly. Insulate the tank and pipes to improve efficiency. Have a professional inspect it every 3 to 5 years.
Why It Matters
Flushing your water heater removes sediment that reduces efficiency and shortens its lifespan. Proper maintenance can add years to your water heater.
