What should I know about my home's insulation?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Check your attic insulation first: it should be at least 12 inches deep for fiberglass or cellulose. Look for gaps around windows, doors, and where pipes enter the house. Insulation is measured by R-value; higher values provide better protection. In South Jersey, attic insulation should be R-38 to R-60. Wall insulation is harder to assess but important for energy efficiency. Consider a professional energy audit.
Why It Matters
Proper insulation is the most cost-effective way to improve comfort and reduce energy bills. Most older homes in South Jersey are under-insulated.
