What should I know about my home's foundation?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Know your foundation type: basement, crawl space, or slab. Watch for warning signs like cracks wider than a quarter inch, doors that stick, windows that do not open smoothly, sloping floors, or water in the basement. Direct water away from the foundation with proper grading and gutters. Small hairline cracks are normal, but expanding cracks need professional evaluation.
Why It Matters
Your foundation is the most critical structural element of your home. Small issues caught early are far less expensive to repair than major structural failures.
