How do I check if a property has lead paint?

Homes built before 1978 are presumed to contain lead-based paint unless testing proves otherwise. Sellers must disclose known lead paint and provide a lead hazard pamphlet. A licensed lead inspector or risk assessor can test surfaces using XRF analyzers or paint chip samples. In New Jersey, lead-safe certification is required for rental properties built before 1978. If you are buying an older home, include a lead inspection in your due diligence.

Lead paint poses serious health risks, especially to children. Knowing whether lead is present helps you plan for safe management or remediation before moving in.
