Should I upgrade to double-pane windows?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

If your home has single-pane windows, upgrading to double-pane windows with low-E coating and argon gas fill is one of the best energy improvements you can make. Double-pane windows reduce heat loss by 40 to 50 percent compared to single-pane. Look for a U-value of 0.30 or lower and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient appropriate for your climate. The payback period typically ranges from 10 to 20 years through energy savings. If your current windows are double-pane but drafty, adding storm windows is a more affordable alternative.

Why It Matters

Windows are a major source of energy loss. Efficient windows improve comfort, reduce condensation, lower noise, and increase home value.
