What is the difference between a deck and a patio?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
A deck is an elevated wooden or composite structure attached to the house, typically built off the ground on posts and joists. A patio is a ground-level hardscape made of concrete, pavers, brick, or stone. Decks require more maintenance including staining and sealing. Patios are more durable and require less upkeep. Decks work better on sloped properties. Patios are generally less expensive and can be installed on any flat surface.
Why It Matters
Choosing between a deck and a patio affects your upfront cost, long-term maintenance, and how the space integrates with your yard and home.
