How do I choose the right decking material?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Pressure-treated wood is the most affordable at $15 to $25 per square foot but requires annual staining and sealing. Cedar and redwood cost more but resist rot naturally. Composite decking like Trex costs $25 to $45 per square foot but requires little maintenance beyond cleaning. PVC decking is fully waterproof and highly durable but costs the most. Consider your budget, maintenance willingness, and how long you plan to stay in the home.

Why It Matters

Your decking material choice determines the look, longevity, and maintenance of your deck for decades. The wrong choice can mean costly repairs or replacement.
