How do I seal air leaks in my home?

Common air leak locations include windows, doors, attic hatches, recessed lighting, baseboards, electrical outlets, and where pipes enter the home. Use caulk for cracks and gaps under 1/4 inch, and spray foam for larger gaps. Weatherstripping around doors and windows is effective and easy to install. A professional energy audit with a blower door test can identify all leaks.
Why It Matters
Air leaks can account for 25 to 30 percent of heating and cooling loss. Sealing them is one of the fastest, cheapest ways to improve comfort and lower bills.
