How do I reduce phantom energy loads?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Phantom loads, also called standby power, are the energy devices consume when turned off but still plugged in. Common culprits include TVs, game consoles, phone chargers, computers, and kitchen appliances. Use smart power strips that cut power when devices are not in use, or simply unplug devices you rarely use. Eliminating phantom loads can save 5 to 10 percent on your electric bill.
Why It Matters
Phantom loads account for 5 to 10 percent of residential electricity use. Reducing them requires no investment and takes only a few minutes.
