How do I reduce my water heating costs?

Set your water heater thermostat to 120 degrees, which is safe and efficient. Insulate the water heater tank and the first six feet of hot water pipes. Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators. Fix leaks promptly. Wash clothes in cold water and run dishwashers only with full loads. Consider a heat pump water heater or tankless water heater when your current unit needs replacement.

Water heating is the second largest energy expense in most homes, accounting for about 18 percent of your energy bill. These changes can cut that cost significantly.
