How do I reduce my home's standby power consumption?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Standby power, also called phantom load, is electricity used by electronics and appliances when they are turned off but still plugged in. This accounts for 5 to 10 percent of home electricity use. Plug electronics into smart power strips that cut power when devices are not in use. Unplug chargers, small appliances, and entertainment systems when not needed. Look for Energy Star products with low standby power ratings.
Why It Matters
Eliminating phantom loads can save up to $100 per year with virtually no effort. Once set up, smart power strips do the work automatically.
