How do I reduce energy loss through my roof?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

The roof is a major source of heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Add attic insulation to achieve R-49 or higher. Ensure proper attic ventilation with soffit and ridge vents to prevent moisture buildup and ice dams. Seal any gaps where pipes, wires, or chimneys penetrate the attic floor. Consider a radiant barrier installed under the roof deck to reflect heat in summer months.

Why It Matters

Heat rises, and an under-insulated, poorly ventilated roof can account for 25 percent or more of your home's total energy loss.
