How do I reduce energy loss through my foundation?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Foundation energy loss happens through uninsulated basement walls, crawl spaces, and slab edges. Insulate basement walls with rigid foam board insulation, especially the rim joist area where significant heat escapes. Seal crawl space vents and insulate crawl space walls rather than the floor above. Apply rigid foam insulation along exposed slab edges. Ensure proper drainage to keep insulation dry and effective.

Why It Matters

An uninsulated foundation can account for 10 to 20 percent of your home's total heat loss. Insulating it improves comfort and reduces energy costs.
