How do I improve my home's insulation?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Start with the attic, where heat loss is greatest. Add blown-in cellulose or fiberglass batts to achieve R-49 or higher. Insulate basement walls and crawl spaces, especially rim joists where significant heat loss occurs. Check wall insulation if you have an older home with uninsulated walls. Duct insulation in unconditioned spaces also helps. A professional insulation contractor can assess your current levels and recommend the best approach.

Why It Matters

Proper insulation is the foundation of an energy-efficient home. It keeps your home comfortable year-round and reduces strain on your HVAC system.
