How do I choose energy-efficient appliances?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Look for the Energy Star label, which indicates the appliance meets strict efficiency guidelines. Compare the Energy Guide yellow tag, which shows estimated annual energy use and cost. Choose the most efficient model that fits your budget. For refrigerators, top-freezer models use less energy than side-by-side. For washers, front-loaders use less water and energy than top-loaders.

Why It Matters

Energy-efficient appliances use 10 to 50 percent less energy than standard models. Over their lifetime, the energy savings often exceed the higher purchase price.
