How do I choose efficient windows and doors?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Look for Energy Star certified windows with low U-factor (heat loss) and low Solar Heat Gain Coefficient for cooling. Double-pane windows with low-E coating and argon gas fill offer good value. For doors, look for insulated steel or fiberglass doors with a foam core and good weatherstripping. Check the NFRC label for energy performance ratings. Proper installation is as important as the product itself.

Why It Matters

Windows and doors are major sources of energy loss. Choosing the right products and installing them correctly can improve comfort and reduce energy bills for decades.
